A narrative review of the literature was carried out with a survey of studies and articles on the use of herbal medicines to treat periodontal diseases in bibliographic databases: Google Scholar, LILACS. Phytotherapeutics are used preventively and curatively, aiming to stop the action of dental biofilm and the onset of oral diseases, involving periodontal diseases and tooth decay. In the field of Dentistry, chamomile, pomegranate, propolis, mallow and clove are generally used as herbal medicines. It was concluded that the use of herbal medicines in the mouth makes it possible to minimize the occurrence of periodontal problems, once tooth brushing techniques are performed correctly by patients at the same time as they carry out their self-care with oral hygiene, avoiding greater discomfort and more complex treatments.
