Interrelationship between asthma and periodontal diseases

Abstract

Introduction: Periodontal and systemic diseases acting concomitantly may have interrelationships that are based on the fundamentals of Periodontal Medicine. Periodontal diseases comprise immunoinflammatory infectious pathologies that can afflict the respiratory tract causing infectious processes. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory pathology that affects the airways. Objective: The objective of this article was to find out how interrelationships and evidence of clinical manifestations between the systemic disease asthma and periodontal diseases can occur. Methodology:  A narrative review of the literature was carried out with a search in the LILACS databases, Google Scholar and a survey of studies and articles that dealt with the possible relationship between the systemic disease asthma and periodontal diseases. Results: Selective and analytical reading of all articles surveyed was carried out and it was found in most studies that the possible interaction between asthma and periodontal diseases may come from the pathogenesis manifested concomitantly by the two pathologies, asthma and periodontal diseases occurring together. The administration of drugs can also cause repercussions with evidence of an interrelationship between periodontal diseases and asthma. At the dental level, as a result of asthma, there may be manifestations of xerostomia and hyposalivation. Conclusion:  It was concluded that a correctly performed dental and diagnostic approach to individuals with asthma can act preventively, minimizing the occurrence of systemic complications that could arise from performing dental procedures, concomitantly enabling these patients to have a better quality of life, reducing discomfort arising from performing curative and more complex dental treatments.
