Abstract

Dental emergencies represent unforeseen and challenging situations that demand prompt clinical intervention to minimize patient discomfort and prevent severe complications. This paper aims to report the experience of an extension project at the dental clinic of UMA Aimorés University Center in Belo Horizonte, where urgent care is provided free of charge to the local population.

The research was conducted during the first semester of 2023 at the undergraduate dental clinic, with students under faculty supervision providing assistance to patients in need of emergency care. The literature review covered scientific studies on dental emergencies, highlighting their frequency, most common causes, and appropriate therapeutic approaches.

The results revealed that the most common dental emergencies include acute toothache, abscesses, dental traumas, and gingival inflammations. Patients responded satisfactorily to emergency treatment, with the majority reporting symptom relief and satisfaction with the care received.

Through the initiative of a university extension project, approximately 50 patients received treatment by July 2023, spanning about 4 months. Patients had their complaints resolved and were embraced by the University.

In conclusion, the dental emergency extension project proved to be fundamental for the education of dental students and the well-being of the served community. The integration of teaching, research, and extension strengthened the ties between the university and society, contributing to the promotion of health and quality of life for the individuals attended to.
