Abstract

Prosthetic rehabilitation with osseointegrated implants is currently considered the gold standard in restoring function and aesthetics in partially edentulous or completely edentulous patients, as it allows the replacement of a tooth in a single dental element or in an entire arch. The failure of dental implants is a factor of great interest to dental surgeons and can be classified as early failure or late failure. Early failure represents the failure to establish osseointegration of the dental implants, while late failure is the failure to establish osseointegration or function of the dental implants. Objective: to analyze, through a literature review, the success and survival rate of implants, as well as the factors that contribute to failure. . Methodology: A detailed search strategy was implemented for the following databases searched: PubMed and Google Scholar, from 2015 to 2021, to identify studies included or considered in this work. The criteria for inclusion were the following: systematic reviews and literary reviews, considered studies in both English and Portuguese. result: After analyzing the articles, it was found that the success rate of implants is very high compared to the rate of failure, it can be seen that the success rate varies between 84.7% and 97.75%. And the causes for implant failure are systemic and local factors, which would be: diabetes mellitus, periodontal diseases, osteoporosis, smoking, surgical failure and ingestion of bisphosphonate-based medications. Final considerations: we found highly favorable results for the survival rate and success of the implants, this means that there is a very low rate of complications associated with the implants.
