Abstract

Introduction: Extraction of impacted lower third molars can damage the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN). Coronectomy, a technique involving the removal of only the crown of the tooth, is recommended for cases with a high risk of damaging the IAN. Objectives: To conduct a study comparing dental students trained and untrained in the coronectomy technique, aiming to evaluate the impact of experience on the effectiveness of the procedure. Methodology: Analysis of data related to the performance of coronectomy in two different groups. One group consisted of a single trained undergraduate student, supervised by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, while the other group consisted of students who performed the same technique without prior training. Results: The duration of the coronectomies performed by the two groups showed similar medians. There was one case of injury to the IAN. The percentage of postoperative edema was lower in the coronectomies performed by the trained student. It was observed that coronectomies performed by the trained student had a lower incidence of complications. Conclusion: Coronectomies performed by the trained student demonstrated a consistent pattern regarding the duration of surgery, postoperative pain, and a lower incidence of complications compared to the untrained student group.
